Chapter Thirteen
The bar was an overcrowded hole in the wall, as were most in New York City. Luca was insistent they go out that very night, even though Bella repeated numerous times she was not moving in. As they made their way towards the back of the bar, there was a small table that a couple was getting up from.
âRun! Youâre small. You can sneak in and get it,â he said with a laugh. This was a side of him she hadnât seen before. The playful, laughing man pushing her through the crowd was an interesting turn of events. Bella hightailed it back to the small forgotten table that had the initials of previous occupants carved into the wood and watched as he muscled his way through the bar to get their drinks. The last few weeks had felt like a whirlwind and now here she was on a date with a man that was consuming her dreams every night. Before they left, she checked in on Jenny just so she could hear once again that she was okay with her and her dadâs relationship jumping into hyper-speed. Once they spoke, she gave in and told Luca one drink would count as a first date, so thatâs all she was staying for. Although she wasnât on call tonight, she had two patients very close to delivery and wanted to make sure she was available in case something came up.
âMan, this place is a zoo. Maybe we should have found something else to do,â he said, placing two beers on the table, âYou drink beer, right?â
âYeah, of course, this is perfect. Thanks.â
He sat down and grinned, looking like the cat that ate the canary. She couldnât figure out what he was up to. Without warning, he tipped his head back in a fit of laughter.
âOkay, who are you and what did you do with the surly Luca Corsetti Iâve grown to know?â
âI am not surly,â he said after he had caught his breath.
âYou most certainly are. You walk around with a stern look on your face and lost eyes half the time. On top of that, you always have your face stuck into a computer, and until tonight, I wasnât even sure you owned a pair of jeans.â
With his eyebrows raised he said, âSo you think you have me figured out, do you, Dr. Ricci?â
âWell, I did until you started laughing like a kid with the case of the giggles.â
âIâm sorry. I just canât believe this, can you? I think my daughter has set us up. The same girl who barely spoke to me and hadnât said a word to anyone else in months. Now here I am with a beautiful woman in a dive bar just so I can convince her to move in with us. My brother told me I was nuts before. If he had any idea what was going on, know he would have me committed.â
âI guess it all is weird. You never mentioned family before. Are you and your brother close?â
âAs close as we can be with him in Miami and me in New York.
